Harsh fighting. That was happening on December 23, 1914 the allies and central powers had been fighting for about a year now, neither side giving an inch. The imagine your surprise as an Allied Solider on the western front when in the evening of the 24th that the Germans are setting there trenches up for Christmas and singing Carrols.
Final a German solider comes out of his trench saying, “No fight today. It’s Christmas.”
An unofficial cease for a whole day. The dead buried, goods exchanged, and no shots fired. The first and only time Christmas was celebrated on the battle field between enemies. That is true Christmas spirit.
My hope this holiday season is that you remember that spirit. But there is also another hope join me in wishing our troops happy holidays and a safe return.
