i love it when people leave a unit it makes room for others. i was right under the XO spot. well the company XO has left and i was next in line for it. need less to say i got a kind of battlefield promotion of sorts for the military ball we are having here. the promotion will be finalized on Wesnday. so as of now my rank is cadet/ commander. next year is my senior year and i have a choice i can go for CO or stay XO. you all i consider you friends so  i ask you. should i stay or go for it?

I say if you want it - go for it! Reach for the stars (or stripes - which ever the case maybe)!

Congratulations: SIR!! I say from the perspective of a grunt that you have the markings of a great CO. Trust me on this one--battlefield promotions are not all they're cracked up to be.

capt.ace23, if your current CO has fits when things go wrong, as they always do, then he should relinquish his command for he sets a very bad example for those who report to him. In the words of the kids today my CO even under fire was the coolest cat, walking. I would have followed him into hell. Come to think about it, I did. Take command. Good training.

cap - how does your personality and commanding (right term?) style differ from your CO?

What are the guys in your unit like? How do you get the leadership training or is it learning by fire?

Does the CO have adequate support from higher ups?

Here's what I think - if you take the position and you have grown positively in a year - great/ if you take the job and because of circumstances beyond your control, you feel less than when you started - then you would be better off not experiencing it.

What do you feel?
